Bobby Shriver Gets Endorsement from West Hollywood Councilman John Duran

Third District supervisorial candidate Bobby Shriver was endorsed today by a former opponent, West Hollywood Councilman John Duran.

Duran said local government experience was one reason he decided to back Shriver, who spent eight years on the Santa Monica City Council.

"I am for fresh ideas created at the local level, I'm for triple A bond ratings ... which is what has succeeded here in West Hollywood and under Bobby's leadership in Santa Monica," Duran said.

He took a dig at former state Sen. Sheila Kuehl, who will face Shriver in a November runoff to replace outgoing Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky.

"We can do better than a retread of Sacramento ideas," Duran said. "Remember, Supervisors Ed Edelman and Zev Yaroslavsky never served a day in Sacramento. All of their service was at the local level."

Duran took third place in the June 3 primary with 16 percent of the vote, following late endorsements by Mayor Eric Garcetti and Supervisor Gloria Molina.

Kuehl, who captured 36 percent of the primary vote to Shriver's 29 percent, told the Los Angeles Times that she would have liked to have Duran's support, but that it wasn't crucial to a win in November.

"I don't know how loyal all the voters might be to John, because in the areas where he did well, I still beat him," Kuehl said.
