Weho City Hall Staff Does Denim Day

On denim day, jeans are worn to protest the justifications made for sexual assault.

There's really no doubt that West Hollywood knows how to make a fashion statement.

Earlier this month, in fact, Weho was named "LA's most fashionable Nabe," and there's no shortage of botiques to browse the latest designs in town.

However, no fashion forward styles were need for the staff at West Hollywood City Hall to make a statement on Wednesday.

Staffers participated in Denim Day USA on Wednesday, a rape prevention campaign that invites community members, elected officials, business owners and students to "make a social statement with their fashion statement by wearing jeans as a visible means of protest against misconceptions that surround sexual assault."

Denim Day was launched in 1998 after the Italian Supreme Court overturned the rape conviction of a 45-year-old driving instructor, arguing that because his victim was wearing tight jeans, she must have undressed herself.

Shortly thereafter, women in the Italian Parliament and eventually the California State Assembly wore tight jeans as a sign of protest.
