Residents, city leaders and others from across Los Angeles gathered Wednesday night in West Hollywood for a rally to celebrate the U.S. Supreme Court’s rulings on Proposition 8 and the Defense of Marriage Act.

"Milk" screenwriter Dustin Lance Black opened the rally.

"Harvey Milk once said we can no longer be satisfied with crumbs," he said. "It’s time that this community stop asking for crumbs and demand the real thing. Because they may find that they could actually get it. And we have today."

West Hollywood Mayor Abbe Land also spoke.

"You are all here at one of the most iconic intersections, Santa Monica and San Vicente, where all LGBT activism happens and today we are here to celebrate that activism," she said. "West Hollywood has always been at the forefront and we are so glad to be able to be hosting this tremendous celebration."

Kristen Tribby said she "was in emotional disbelief" when she learned of the Supreme Court’s rulings.

"What I really hope for the gay community is that people don't forget that there is still a lot of work to be done," she said.

Courtney Tomplait talked about how she and partner Bethany Keplinger reacted to the Supreme Court’s ruling.

"I'm always crying. I'm the crier and she’s the consoler. When we found out about it l was bawling and she's just happy and consoles the crying," she said.

Karen O'Keefe said she "look(s) forward to the day when all states recognize this."

"Finally people aren't considered less than because they are gay," she said.
