Week in Review: Election Results, Census Information and a Tsunami Warning

West Hollywood Patch also reported that the driver in the fatal Sunset hit-and-run accident was sentenced to just under a year in jail.

From voters taking to the polls to the latest census information released, West Hollywood saw some big stories from March 6-12.

Change arrived in West Hollywood politics Tuesday night with the election of John D’Amico to the City Council. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued a early Friday morning for California's coast north of Point Concepcion. Under a plea deal, was sentenced to 364 days in a private Los Angeles jail facility on Friday.

A total of 5,346 people voted in the election on Tuesday. Heavily favored easily won one of the three seats up for election by defeating incumbent . Incumbents  and  were both re-elected.

Unlike many cities in the area, West Hollywood's population dropped over the past decade by a tiny percentage, while minority populations grew, according to data released earlier this week. The racial group that saw the most dramatic change in the city was the Asian population, which grew by 39 percent, from 1350 in 2000 to 1874 in 2010.

News of a  for Ryan Mathew Bowman—the Australian businessman who pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of a November collision that killed a 21-year-old woman crossing Sunset—sparked some discussion for West Hollywood readers and tweeters.

The manual tally and selection of the precincts, which was scheduled for March 10, will commence at 9 a.m. at  on Monday. The final counting of provisional and vote-by-mail ballots will be finalized by 1:30 p.m. 

Temporary traffic control will be set up around the sewer manholes east of Hayworth Avenue, beginning this week through July 2011, as part of the city's East Side Sewer Repair and Rehabilitation Program. Cars will be able to drive around the work trucks at a reduced speed.
