Week in Review: El Mirador, Robo-Garage and Racy Billboards

The El Mirador owner says he plans to demolish the 83-year-old apartment building. The City Council approves building the automated parking garage behind City Hall. A racy billboard on the Sunset Strip has people talking.

The . Owner Jerome Nash is ready to go to court to get approval to tear down the 32-unit building on the northeast corner of Sweetzer and Fountain avenues following the City Council’s decision not to approve his plan to covert the 83-year-old building to condos or an urban inn.

The City Council , despite plans to conduct a feasibility study to move City Hall to a Boystown location. The Council said that the mid-city area needs the parking and that the city would retain ownership of the structure even if City Hall moves and the existing City Hall building is sold. A has also been started.

The City Council , built in 1952 by renowned architect Edward Fickett, FAIA, as a “cultural resource.” The owner of the building told the Council he could not afford the upkeep the historic designation requires.

The City Council , which has provided trash and recycling services to the city since 2004. Athens was proposing to greatly enhance the services it provides in exchange for a long-term contract. The Council was divided as to whether to lock in a good price or seek bids from other trash collection companies first.

Risque billboards are common on the Sunset Strip, but a new one advertising a dating site for younger men looking for older women is getting some attention. Several of the letters on the billboard are blurred, so it doesn’t actually say the word, but the intent is clear. The billboard happens to be in the parking lot where the weekly Sunset Strip Market is held, .

Local Voices

Blogger Scott Schmidt discussed with the city. Schmidt said the silver lining that came from the hearing was “the Council proved itself smart enough to see through the risible claims of outside groups trying to meddle in our local affairs.”

Blogger Chloe Ross , a love enhanced after attending the various sales at the city-wide yard sale held July 14-15 yard sales. She notes that there are yard sales going on about town every weekend and suggested using the Weho Patch’s Events calendar’s Garage Sale category as a place to list weekly sale. No, Weho Patch did not put her up to that; she came up with the idea on her own.
