Week in Review: Andaz Boycott, Target Protest and Proposition 19 Support

Our coverage also includes mobile billboard ban legislation.

We had it all this week in West Hollywood: Celebrity news, crime, marijuana and protests. We learned that Target Corp. has not responded to the City Council's request for an apology. A news conference was held in West Hollywood in support of Proposition 19. Lindsay Lohan turned to her Twitter page to talk about her failed drug test. And a protest was held at the local Target against the parent company's political contributions. Here's a recap of what happened in West Hollywood, including the boycott launched against the Hyatt Andaz Hotel.

MONDAY

In our story New Legislation Could Put Teeth in Mobile Billboard Ban, we learned that a bill awaiting Gov. Schwarzenegger's signature would make it easier for cities to enforce bans on signs parked along streets. The governor has until Sept. 30 to sign or veto the bill.

The City Council is still waiting on Target Corp. to issue an apology to the LGBT community and take corrective measures against the individuals responsible for making a $150,000 donation in support of an anti-gay candidate in Minnesota.

TUESDAY:

Do you like strawberries? If so, you should meet Kris Gean of Harry's Berries, a family-owned and operated farm in Oxnard. Every week, Gean welcomes customers to his stand with a smile and some of the freshest berries and vegetables to be found in California.

What does a typical conversation around Weho sound like? Can you say, "?" Jerome Cleary shares what he hears often around West Hollywood.

A group of former police officers and judges announced its support for Proposition 19, saying legalizing marijuana would free up scarce resources to prosecute more serious offenses.

WEDNESDAY:

The West Hollywood Social Club is hosting a bar crawl to raise money for basic necessities for kids around the world. The event is coming up on Sept. 25 and to find the list of participating bars, click here.

Hotel workers and labor organizers from Unite Here Local 11 gathered outside the Hyatt Andaz hotel in West Hollywood on Wednesday afternoon to announce a boycott against three LA-area Hyatt hotels. The group said $500,000 in business events will be diverted as a result.

Whatever Happened to Great Customer Service? According to blogger Jerome Cleary, some employees have forgotten what that means.

THURSDAY

There were plenty of burglarized homes and businesses this past week. Check out the police blotter to help you stay safe.

A driver died this week in West Hollywood when his sport utility vehicle crashed into a tree on La Brea Avenue. The driver was identified as Darrell K. Mervin, 49, of Los Angeles. His vehicle ended up on the sidewalk. There were no other injuries reported.

Where's the party on the Sunset Strip these days? Sunset Boulevard seems awfully quiet at night, says our blogger.

Parking tickets are such a pain. Now imagine if a defective automated system prevented you from paying them on time? That's a whole other reason to hate parking tickets.

FRIDAY

West Hollywood doesn't sleep—especially on the weekends. Check out this new installment of Weho Patch called  "Weho Weekend Watch" where we'll highlight some of the fun activities to do around West Hollywood.

This week, residents had the opportunity to attend the General Plan public hearings. Many residents criticized the proposed General Plan and said the  "vision for the city" will drive out Russian businesses, fail to fix parking shortages and endanger significant architecture.

Can you imagine what it would be like if we didn't have to hear our neighbors partying in the middle of the night? Would you sign a "No Noise" lease for an apartment? Tell us if you think this is a good idea.

SATURDAY:

A group of LGBT activists gathered outside West Hollywood's Target to protest the parent company's contribution to a political group that supports an anti gay marriage Minnesota gubernatorial candidate.

In our weekly Rescue Dog of the Week, we met Hubble, a German shepherd mix who's 3½ months.

In our story, Actress Lindsay Lohan Tweets About Her Failed Drug Test, we showed you how she turned to her Twitter page to acknowledge her substance abuse and the possibility of reappearing in court in the near future. The 24-year-old actress is a resident of West Hollywood.
