Week in Review: Altschul Out, Summer Solstice In, and the Arrival of Coney Dog

This week kicked off with the official opening of Sunset Strip's newest eatery . Nestled smack in the middle of iconic Sunset Strip, with its famed music venues and hotspot eateries, brand new restaurant serves up Detroit-style hot dogs, chili-cheese fries, and Faygo pop. 

City Council decided Monday to by $3 across the board in West Hollywood. These fee increases are expected to generate an additional $500,000 for the city each year. Councilman John Heilman also opted not to reappoint longtime Planning Commissioner John Altschul.

Weho Patch reported Friday that a  will be re-created on the Sunset Strip as part of the larger Los Angeles-wide art project, Pacific Standard Time. The famous Artists’ Tower of Protest stood on an empty lot on the Sunset Strip between February and May 1966.

City police, fire and transportation officials sought to assure audience members at a Thursday night that they were fully prepared to protect the public during the 53-hour closure in mid-July. The planners have designated 13 communities on the Westside and in the San Fernando Valley near the freeway where police and fire crews will be stationed.

A line began to form outside Coney Dog at noon on Monday. Weho Patch caught the first official day of business for the Sunset Strip's new Detroit-themed restaurant on . The place smelled of steamed buns, chili and chopped white onions. 

Vegetarians and carnivores alike poured into the Roxy Theatre parking lot Saturday for the . The event featured over 50 beers made without animal products from 22 brewers throughout California.

The days leading up to  were full of rehearsals, logistics and remembrance. About 480 students graduated Thursday evening. Patch's new intern, Devin Kelly, spoke to students and staff about Thursday's big event.

City will commence on Holloway Dr, Horn Ave, Sherbourne Dr, Shoreham Dr, Palm Ave, and Westmount Dr this week. During the grinding work, there will be temporary no street parking and very limited access for cars in and out of driveways, so plan ahead.

National HIV Testing Day is Monday. Free HIV rapid testing and testing for other STDs, including gonorrhea, chlamydia and syphilis, will be available at AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) Out of the Closet stores. An HIV Service Roundtable with county officials will be held Wednesday in Plummer Park.

The City of West Hollywood’s Arts and Cultural Affairs Commission and the Lesbian and Gay Advisory Board will host the documentary film On These Shoulders We Standfor the One City/One Pride Culture Series at 7 p.m. on Thursday at The Renberg Theatre – Village at Ed Gould Plaza in Los Angeles.
