Wednesday's Scoop: Ray Bradbury Biographer Sam Weller to Discuss 'Fahrenheit 451'

In addition to the 'Big Read' program, Book Soup is hosting two author events, the Standard is presenting its 'Desert Nights' showcase, and the Mondrian continues its art and music series.

Greetings, and welcome to today's City Scoop. Here's what's happening Wednesday in West Hollywood:

Sam Weller Lecture

Ray Bradbury biographer Sam Weller will present a lecture on the author in conjunction with West Hollywood's "Big Read 2012" program, whose 2012 selection is Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451. The lecture and presentation entitled "The Man Behind The Masterpiece" is taking place from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers at the library.

Double Book Signings

Book Soup will host two authors: at 3 p.m., Mike Doughty will present and sign copies of The Book of Drugs. At 7 p.m., Joel Engel will discuss and sign copies of The Devil in the City of Angels.

Desert Nights

The weekly gathering at the showcases musicians in an intimate “living room” type setting hosted by KCRW’s DJ Valida. Don’t miss some indie-pop/folk performances by Count Fleet, Monsters Calling Home, and Haroula Rose at 7:30 p.m. in the Cactus Lounge. Entrance is free.

High Kicks

The new art and music series continues this evening at the hotel's Skybar. Glam-rock talent Justin Tranter of Semi Precious Weapons will man the turntables beginning at 9 p.m. This poolside affair also showcases pieces from world renowned street artists from the LABArt gallery. Kelly McGarry presents L.A. rockers Badwater along with the flawlessly photogenic Jennifer Akerman and her electro outfit Bella Tech at the House of Blues, reports blogger Brent Mendoza. Other notables include Drug The Kids, Awaken The Empire and Gunslinger. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for this 18 and older show are $15 day of show.

The Forecast

The National Weather Service forecasts rain before 11 a.m., with partly cloudy skies by the end of the day. Temperatures are expected to reach near 63 and drop a low around 48 in West Hollywood. Chance of precipitation is 80 percent.
