UPDATE: Water Main Rupture Causes Street Flooding Near West Hollywood

There are at least five breaks reported in the Fairfax District, West Hollywood and Hollywood areas.

UPDATE: A section of Third Street is expected to stay closed until about 7 p.m.

Five water mains failed early Tuesday in or near L.A.'s Fairfax district, causing street flooding and pavement damage in a cluster of breakdowns that the Department of Water and Power blamed on inspection work it performed at the reservoir that serves the area.

"As part of regular inspection protocol, the reservoir is taken offline and temporarily replaced by a different source of water," the LADWP said in a statement regarding the work that it carried out Monday. "Operational changes such as these can cause fluctuations in pressure, and expose weaknesses in older main lines."

As of 9 a.m., about 130 customers were experiencing service interruptions or lowered pressure, the LADWP reported.

A break in a main at the intersection of West Third Street and South Fairfax Avenue was reported at 2:38 a.m. Tuesday, said Los Angeles Fire Department Capt. Thomas Somers.

The break was in an eight-inch line closed Third Street between Fairfax and Gilmore Lane. The flooding caused parts of Third Street to buckle, a news photographer reported from the scene.

A water main also broke at 1:36 a.m. at the intersection of North Bronson and La Mirada avenues in Hollywood, causing flooding, Somers said. A news photographer reported damaged pavement in that area as well.

About 5 a.m., a water main break was reported in the 900 block of North Croft Avenue in Los Angeles just south of West Hollywood, Somers said. At least one parked vehicle was damaged by flowing water.

About a half hour later, a main reportedly ruptured in the 300 block of North Vista Street near Beverly Boulevard, also in the Fairfax district.
