Warmer Weather Brings Summer Stone Fruit to Weho Market

Ha's Apple Orchard arrives with three varieties of nectarines, and Harry's Berries sells the first picking of fresh blackberries.

A is upon us. The warm temperatures this week finally allowed for farmers to harvest the summer feast. Nectarines, peaches and blackberries were abundant at Monday's .

, an Oxnard orchard that has been delayed because of the weather, finally arrived to market with its harvest of stone fruits, including yellow, white and donut peaches, along with three varieties of nectarines.

Also hailing from Oxnard, Harry’s Berries, had an impressive display of summer fruit on Monday.

“Blackberry season is very short for us and they are perfect right now. I will only have them for the next four or five weeks,” said Kris Gean, the owner of Harry’s Berries. “This time of year is when our farm really kicks in with other produce items than just our ."

In addition to the blackberries, Harry’s Berries was selling a variety of summer vegetables, including green and yellow French haricot vert beans and the more traditional long green beans.

“Regular customers have been waiting for our French beans,” Gean said. “The cooler temperatures caused their delay, but I’ve got them for the rest of summer."

The Gean family will celebrate 25 years of participating at California-certified farmers markets later this month. Their July 23 event features tours of the farm and an art gallery filled with artwork made from recycled farm waste.

The main event is centered around the Harry’s Berries Dinner Party, where the dinner menu features everything grown and fresh picked on the farm, including a salad made with HB baby lettuces, edible flowers tossed with strawberry vinaigrette, and pasta served with roasted cherry tomatoes.
