Red Building at Pacific Design Center to Top Out

Developer and owner Charles Cohen and architect Cesar Pelli will place a piece of shimmering red glass as part of the topping out ceremony at Pacific Design Center on Monday.

A ceremony and cocktail reception to celebrate the completion of the Red Building at the Pacific Design Center will be held on Monday at 4:30 p.m.

The Red Building is the third and final piece in the three-part project at the Pacific Design Center by architect Cesar Pelli and developer and owner Charles S. Cohen. The Blue Building, also known as the blue whale, was completed in 1975 and the Green Building in 1988.

The Red Building is the third, final and most striking component of the world-famous design.

Pelli and Cohen will install a piece of shimmering red glass on the western façade of the Red Building, the Cohen Brothers real estate development firm announced this week.

The Red Building has 400,000 square feet of creative office space and has parking spaces for nearly 1,500 cars and will be ready for tenant improvement build outs in the spring and ready for occupancy later this year.

“The new Red Building is really a building for the next century. It has all the ingredients that today’s and tomorrow’s tenants could want,” Cohen said in a statement. “The unique and luxurious amenities offered here are not available anywhere else in Southern California including a VIP express elevator that transports executives from a valet drop directly to their offices.”

The event will also bring together a reunion of "The L.A. 12 Architects," a project that brought together 12 of Los Angeles' top architects at the Pacific Design Center back when the Blue Building opened.

"The criteria for the original exhibit was to include 12 architects who had been practicing 12 years and had designed 12 projects that contained some commonalities," the announcement said.

The Pacific Design Center is frequently used for many cultural events in music, art and entertainment as well as in architecture and interior design. The Elton John AIDS Foundation will host its 19th Annual Academy Awards viewing party tonight at the Pacific Design Center. It is also home to the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) and two restaurants operated by chef Wolfgang Puck.
