City Seeks to Help Those Affected by Hurricane Sandy

Those wishing to donate to the city's efforts can visit the official West Hollywood website.

The following is a press release from the City of West Hollywood.

The City of West Hollywood extends its condolences to those who have suffered enormous personal hardship and loss as a result of Hurricane Sandy. In the wake of this national disaster, the City of West Hollywood wants to encourage residents to assist those affected by Hurricane Sandy by visiting the City’s website and donating to the American Red Cross and/or Operation USA at www.weho.org

“In the wake of one of the worst and strongest hurricanes ever recorded, the East Coast is in recovery mode,” said West Hollywood Mayor Jeffrey Prang. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected by the destruction of Hurricane Sandy."

“The people of the City of West Hollywood are and always have been caring and supportive in face of tragedy and unavoidable disasters," Prang added. "Our program, West Hollywood Responds will make help make that show of support convenient, easy and safe."

“My heart goes out to those impacted by Hurricane Sandy,” said West Hollywood Mayor Pro Tempore Abbe Land. “As the recovery efforts from the storm continue, there is a critical need for resources. West Hollywood is a compassionate community that cares about the many people on the east coast who have been impacted by this hurricane. West Hollywood Responds is our way to reach out and contribute towards a faster recovery by donating to organizations on the ground."

The American Red Cross provides disaster relief at home and abroad. Each year, the American Red Cross immediately responds to about 70,000 natural and man-made disasters in the U.S., ranging from fires to hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, tornadoes, hazardous materials spills, transportation accidents and explosions.  People count on the Red Cross to help them in their darkest hour. The support of donors makes it possible for the Red Cross to fulfill its humanitarian mission.

Operation USA is an international relief agency based in West Hollywood.  Operation USA helps communities at home and abroad overcome the effects of disasters, disease and endemic poverty by providing privately-funded relief, reconstruction and development aid.  The City worked with Operation USA on other disaster relief efforts including the Indian Ocean Tsunami of 2004 and Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

You can also go directly to the Operation USA site to donate. The founder, Richard Walden, does an incredible job and you know that all the money goes directly to the cause. Thanks. http://www.opusa.org/
