Brett Shaad Memorial Fund Testament to Weho Man's Kindness

Any funds remaining after the memorial service will be used to help establish the Brett Shaad Foundation.

For those who never known him, West Hollywood Attorney Brett Shaad is known only for the tragic circumstances of his death, and the controversy that followed it.

Shaad was diagnosed with meningococcal meningitis early last week. By Saturday, Shaad's family removed him from life support.

In the days between his diagnoses, Shaad become the symbol of a local meningitis scare, despite the fact that Los Angeles County Health officials have yet to confirm that the strain of the infection that killed him is the same as the one that has killed seven gay men in New York City.

To his friends, Shaad was so much more than the composite sketch the media hastily composed after his death.

"He lived life to the fullest," said Cory B. Savage, Shaad's best friend. "He really didn't miss out on anything."

Shaad had boundless energy, Savage said, going to the gym six times a week and traveling to foreign countries 12 times a year, including a recent trip to Hong Kong.

Savage added that Shaad was the friendliest person in their tight-knit group of friends.

"He never judged anyone," Savage said. "He was probably the kindest person I knew; he would talk to anyone, anywhere."

Evidence of Shaad's reputation among his friend group can be seen in the more than $11,000 that has been donated to the memorial fund established by Savage in the last three days.

The fund will help to pay for a memorial service for friends and family to be held on Monday, April 29.

"Rest in Peace Brett. You have left a wonderful mark in this world," said Sulaiman Prabu. "We all will have great memories of you."

The service is not open to the public or the press, but those who wish to attend can reach Savage at Corybsavage@mac.com. Any funds remaining after the service will be donated to the Brett Shaad Foundation, which will focus on mental health services and suicide prevention.
