Patch Blog: I Need My Own Transgendered Black Drag Queen to be My Guardian Angel!

We all need our own Transgendered Black Drag Queen giving sage advice! Where's yours and mine?

Everybody needs a Transgendered Black Drag Queen in their life and I’m super jealous that Devin has found hers!  I had the pleasure of meeting Devin Ford who’s directed a film starring Ms. Venus about their journey of friendship and self-discovery.  It was so fascinating listening to Devin talk about her growing up in a conservative family that taught her gays would go to hell and then her transformation into someone who respects and loves a gay transgendered black drag queen is a story that I want to know about.  She’s currently in the process of funding this film and I’ve added the link to kickstarter.

i need a hero…’ is a 90-minute documentary film (currently in development). The hero of our story is Ms. Venus, a 53-year-old Transgendered Black Drag Queen from Memphis, living in Mobile.

In my early 20's, seeing Ms. Venus perform inspired me to follow my dreams. Ten years later we go on a journey with myself—a white, straight, Southern, former Evangelical—and Ms. Venus. We will examine how homophobia, gender inequality and the good ole' boys club affect women and the gay community. As we explore our heritage through our narrative, her costumes, and my photographs, we will get to see the South as it was and the South today.

Ms. Venus' story is one of courage and resolve against oppression and adversity to become a hometown hero.  We will witness the incredible strength of the human spirit and also the toll it has taken – we will see the hero behind the mask.

Our story illustrates the value of human connection, the power of friendship, and shows how we can create change around us.  In a world where we are constantly told to conform to the status quo she will truly inspire. Changing hearts is the first step and you can help us show the masses a human being - not a statistic, not a sin, and not a mistake!
