West Hollywood Gateway Under Repair

The shopping center's courtyard area will be closed for several weeks while crews fix a drainage problem. A paint job will follow.

West Hollywood Gateway customers in the past week have been greeted by construction barriers as the shopping center at the southwest corner of Santa Monica Boulevard and La Brea Avenue conducts repairs.

The paving stones in the center’s courtyard area have been removed to repair some drainage problems. Similar repair work was done on the center’s second level late last year.

“It’s just some basic maintenance and repair work,” said a Gateway spokesperson. “We’ve been open seven years and have to do some repairs.”

All shops in the 250,000-square-foot shopping center remain open during this repair work, which should last several weeks. To minimize the impact on shoppers, the center made arrangements for crews to work at night.

Once the repairs are finished, the center will also get a paint job. “After seven years, the paint does fade some, so we’ll give it a fresh coat,” said the spokesperson. “It will be the same colors.”

Ultimately, the center's owners believe shoppers will be unaware that the repairs and paint job ever took place. “If someone came here last month and doesn’t come back for several months,” said the spokesperson, “they won’t be able to tell anything’s changed.”

The sycamore tree in the courtyard area has been removed, but will be replaced once the repairs are finished. Many shoppers have been surprised to realize the tree was planted in a concrete container rather than directly into the ground.

“There’s two levels of parking directly beneath that tree,” said the spokesperson.

West Hollywood Gateway opened in 2004 and brought , and BevMo to town. Gateway center shops employ almost 1,000 people year-round. During the Christmas shopping season, that number swells considerably. Target alone employs almost 600 people during the holidays, with Best Buy having 250.

Built on the site of a former carwash, the Gateway was the city’s first major project to begin revitalizing the city’s eastside. Although many initially opposed the project, the center now generates more tax revenue for the city than any other place in Weho.
