Expect to Pay More at West Hollywood Target

With Black Friday around the corner, West Hollywood shoppers are gearing up for good deals. But those headed to the local may want to visit neighboring locations instead.

In a recent survey, Patch found that prices at the West Hollywood discount department store are higher by as much as 20 percent on some items than the two nearest Target stores.

On Nov. 20, Patch surveyed 50 items in all departments (grocery, healthy/beauty, clothing, baby supplies, pet supplies, housewares, electronics and toys) at three Targets—the location at La Brea Avenue in West Hollywood, the North Hollywood store at 11051 Victory Blvd. at Vineland Avenue, and the Culver City location at 3535 La Cienega Blvd. at Rodeo Road, which is one of three stores Target has in Culver City.

Patch looked at a range of products, from high-ticket items like video games and small appliances to everyday items like pet food and dish detergent. This non-scientific study found that the West Hollywood store had the highest prices of the three stores.

A Radio Flyer plastic wagon was $12 higher in Weho. A box of Pampers disposable diapers was $3.50 higher. A bottle of Advil ibuprofen was $3.40 higher. Tide Ultra laundry detergent was $2.10 higher, Purina dog food was $1.50 higher, Kellogg’s Raisin Bran cereal was $.55 higher, and Chips Ahoy cookies were $.50 higher than the other two stores. 

Prices in North Hollywood tended to be the next highest, but the difference between North Hollywood and Culver City prices was minimal on most items.

The higher priced items in West Hollywood were in the grocery, toy, pet supply, baby supply and healthy/beauty departments. Prices in clothing, housewares and electronics were generally consistent at all three stores.

Many people Patch spoke with were under the impression that Target had the same prices at all their stores. West Hollywood resident Alex Davis said he has only shopped at the Weho Target since it opened in the Gateway Center in 2004. Before that, he said, he was a regular customer at the Target on La Cienega.

“When [Target] first opened here, their prices were consistent with the La Cienega store,” Davis said. “It’s upsetting to know somewhere along the line they raised the prices in Weho. I guess I’ll have to start going back to La Cienega if it means I can save more. They’re only five miles apart.”

When contacted by Weho Patch, the Target corporate office in Pasadena acknowledged they do have different prices in different stores. A corporate spokesperson released this statement:

Target strives to offer the best selection at the best price and our goal is to be competitively priced in each trade area. Target accepts price-match on items in the same store where the item was purchased. Competitive pricing is based on the retail environment for each individual community and can vary between Target stores. This is a common practice among retailers.

Below is the list of items Patch surveyed and the prices found at each store. When items were on sale, the regular price was also listed.

Note that for a few items sold in North Hollywood and on La Cienega, the sale price was exactly the same as the regular price, despite a sign indicating the item was on sale. Also note that for one item surveyed, a Scrabble board game, the sale price was actually 10 cents higher than the regular price at the North Hollywood and La Cienega stores.

Be aware that Target changes prices frequently, so the prices listed below, especially on sale items, may not be the prices offered now.

Occasionally the price that rings up on the store scanner is different from the shelf tag price. The prices listed below are the shelf tag price, which is the price the store is required to honor. Customers are advised to always check their sales receipt for inconsistencies before leaving the store.
