HIV Map Gives New Perspective on Epidemic in L.A. County

Emory University unveils interactive online map depicting county's HIV prevalence by ZIP Code.

Emory University of Atlanta released an interactive online map Thursday morning that shows HIV prevalence in Los Angeles County by ZIP Code.

The map, AIDSVu, rates the prevalence of the disease by sex, race/ethnicity and age group.

"AIDSVu provides a unique view of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the United States," university officials said in a media announcement on the eve of . "The detailed data on AIDSVu pinpoint areas of the country where HIV prevalence rates are the highest, and where the needs for prevention, testing and treatment services are the most urgent."

Launched in June, the site also provides New York City and Washington, D.C. data.

According to the university's Rollins School of Public Health, the L.A. County HIV Program estimated more than 61,000 people living with HIV in 2011, and that at least 13,000 did not know their status, because they had not been tested and diagnosed.
 
AIDSVu’s L.A. County ZIP Code-level data were obtained from the county Department of Public Health and were compiled by researchers at Emory University, according to the announcement.
