'The Color Purple' Premieres in West Hollywood Friday

The production funded in part by a grant from the city opens at the Celebration Theatre Mar. 9 and runs through May 26.

Soul-stirring musical, The Color Purple, is making its West Hollywood debut at Friday.

Nominated for 11 Tony Awards, the drama based on Alice Walker's 1982 book stars a woman named Celie, who finds her unique voice in the world.

Celebration Theatre's production features a cast of 17 under the direction of NAACP award winner Michael Matthews, with musical direction by Gregory Nabours and choreography by Janet Roston.

The theatre company based on Santa Monica Boulevard is dedicated to presenting "innovative, provocative and relevant work that examines the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and queer experience," according to their website.

The program is funded in part by a grant from the City of West Hollywood through its Arts and Cultural Affairs Commission and will run March 9 to May 26.
