'Pop Realism' Exhibition Opens Thursday at Weho Art Gallery

Two accomplished artists with a penchant for pop culture themes begin a month-long exhibition Thursday at the Hamilton-Selway Fine Art gallery in West Hollywood.

Jean Wells is renowned for her large-scale mosaic sculptures, and co-exhibitor Doug Bloodworth has quickly established a reputation as one of today's premiere photorealist painters.

Both artists incorporate iconic childhood foods, drinks, games and memorabilia into their works, which will be on display at Hamilton-Selway until June 6.

"The art that I create is a combination of what I do," Wells said. "I am a third generation mosaic artist and I grew up in the '60s and '70s during the pop era."

With a background in graphic design and advertising, Wells draws on her extensive knowledge of pop culture. She has exhibited her work in several prestigious institutions, including LACMA.

Bloodworth explained his similar perspective with regard to pop culture themes.

"My artistic perspective is heavily influenced by my childhood affection for American western classics and paper-printed comics from the era," he said.

"We complement each other's work well," Bloodworth said. "I have been primarily exhibited on the East Coast, and I am excited about the opportunity to exhibit in Los Angeles."

Wells agreed on the synergy between her sculptures and Bloodworth's paintings, adding that "Hamilton-Selway Fine Art is known for representing blue chip Pop Art masters, and Doug and I are proud to be showcasing our work at the gallery."

The opening reception for the exhibition is Thursday from 5-8 p.m.
