Outfest Today: Saturday at the Movies

Nineteen programs are on the schedule for the LGBT film festival today including a 30th anniversary screening of "Making Love," a documentary about first openly gay bishop in the Episcopal Church and a dysfunctional family comedy.

Outfest is well underway. The 30th annual LA gay and lesbian film festival enters the third day of its 10-day run with 19 programs being held today (Saturday, July 14).  

Today’s schedule is loaded with some of the best of the festival. Three of the Greg in Hollywood website’s “Greg’s Top 10 Outfest Picks” screen today – Petunia, Sassy Pants and Gayby.

Today also features a 30th anniversary screening of Making Love, the first mainstream Hollywood movie to tackle coming out. There’s also a documentary about Bishop Gene Robinson, the first openly gay man elected to become a bishop in the Episcopal Church.

Also scheduled is a panel discussion with TV sitcom writers about the evolution of gay portrayals in TV comedies over the last 35 years.  

The 19 programs are being held at three different venues:

  • Directors Guild of America (DGA) theatre (7920 Sunset Blvd. at Fairfax Avenue)
  • Harmony Gold theater (7655 Sunset Blvd. at Stanley Avenue)
  • REDCAT (Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theatre) at the Disney Concert Hall (631 W. 2nd Street) in downtown Los Angeles.

Same day tickets can be purchased at the venue box office one hour prior to screening time, depending on availability. Advance tickets for screenings happening later in the festival can be purchased in the DGA lobby.

A complete directory of the films being screened is available on the Outfest website, but below is a quick rundown of some of the best playing today:

Mississippi: I Am – documentary about how Mississippi native Lance Bass coming out inspired gay youth in the state to become LGBT leaders there (11:30 a.m., DGA 2).

Petunia – dysfunctional family comedy starring Michael Urie, Christine Lahti, Brittany Snow and Thora Burch from Fat Girls director/screenwriter Ash Christian (1:30 p.m., DGA 1).

Face 2 Face – documentary about a lonely woman who sets out to meet some of the virtual friends she’s made via Facebook (2 p.m., Harmony Gold).

Queen of Sheba Meets the Atom Man – 1963 drama offering a glimpse of the New York City gay scene of the early 1960s (2 p.m., REDCAT). 

Love Free or Die – documentary about Bishop Gene Robinson, the first openly gay man to become a bishop in the Episcopal Church (4:15 p.m., DGA 1)

TV Comedy’s Come a Long Way, Baby! – panel discussion with TV sitcom writers talking about LGBT portrayals on TV over the last 35 years (4:30 p.m., Harmony Gold).

Making Love – 30th anniversary screening of the first mainstream Hollywood drama addressing gay issues in a realistic-but-upbeat manner, starring Michael Ontkean as a doctor who leaves his wife (Kate Jackson) after falling for another man (Harry Hamlin) (6:30 p.m., Harmony Gold).

Sassy Pants – teen comedy about a girl who moves in with her father and his much younger boyfriend (Haley Joel Osment) (7 p.m., DGA 1)

Beauty – South African drama about a married family man with a secret gay life who becomes obsessed with his best friend’s grown son (9:30 p.m., DGA 2).

Gayby – comedy about a woman trying to get pregnant with the help of her gay best friend (9:45 p.m., DGA 1).
