Lady Sinatra Set to Bring Wild Stage Antics to the SSMF

Front man Joseph Holiday talks onstage bloopers, Motley Crue and the band's upcoming Sunset Strip Music Fest show at the Viper Room.

Standing in the audience of a Lady Sinatra concert is not for the faint of heart. Given the band's penchant for robust jumping on stage, spitting water fights and riling audiences into uncontrollable frenzies, you are likely to end up soaking wet. But you'll also leave fully satisfied.

Employing heavy guitar riffs, deep baselines and peppy drumbeats to accentuate feisty lyrics—inspired by such varied topics as space rock and Asian sex parlors, the West Hollywood four-piece has a distinctive sound that it has proudly self-proclaimed as “man rock.”

In the midst of putting the finishing touches on their upcoming album, the members of Lady Sinatra has been playing gigs around Southern California, with a recent stop in Vegas. The band is set to perform at the Sunset Strip Music Festival on Aug. 19 at the  at 10 p.m.

In an interview with West Hollywood Patch, front man Joseph Holiday, known to many as the principal doorman at the Viper Room, explains that experiencing a live Lady Sinatra show is “the most exciting 28 minutes of your life.”

West Hollywood Patch: First off, why the name Lady Sinatra? What is the significance?

Joseph Holiday: Absolutely none. I thought of it while I was shaving. But my grandmother actually did in fact have a blind date with Frank Sinatra, but didn't go because she just met my grandfather. True story. So she could very well had been Lady Sinatra, but then I wouldn't have been born and our awesome band wouldn't exist.

Patch: You call yourselves "man rock." What does that mean exactly?

Holiday: Loud, obnoxious man rock. Man rock, because we are all pretty hairy.

Patch: Who are your musical influences?

Holiday: So much. We are all music geeks. We steal from so many bands. But a few that come to mind are At The Drive In, The Stooges, Jawbreaker, Girls Against Boys, The Bad Brains, Nick Cave, Refused, Barkmarket, The Hot Snakes, The Jesus Lizard and anything even remotely Goth.

Patch: You get pretty wild on stage. What has been the craziest thing that has happened mid-song?

Holiday: Once at a show in New Jersey, I split my pants down the crotch with no underwear on … in front of my mom.

Patch: Are you excited that your SSMF show will be at the Viper Room?

Holiday: Yes! We are excited to play there, because they have the sexiest staff on the Strip.

Patch: What are most of your audiences like?

Holiday: Alcoholics, weirdos, people with no friends. People most of the time go to our shows alone. It's the most exciting 28 minutes of your life.

Patch: Are you planning on checking out any other bands at the SSMF?

Holiday: Motley freakin' Crue! All Hail The Yeti. And Semi Precious Weapons, they are homies.

Patch: Strangest thing you've written a song about?

Holiday: Asian sex parlors. (“Pink Office”)

Patch: You just played a really fun gig at a car event at a strip club. What was the deal with that?

Holiday: It was a great time. Cute tattooed girls and tricked out purple mini vans with a stripper pole in them.

Patch: Aside from gearing up to rock the Sunset Strip Music Fest, what’s next on the agenda for the band?

Holiday: We are due to release our next record, We're Not Happy Till Yer Not Happy, in November, but the first single, "Gold Lung," in August. East Coast tour in September. Residency at The Viper Room in November with lots of killer bands.
