Falling Into Fashion: Trends for Summer to Autumn

Find the items that will take you through the changing seasons at three Melrose boutiques.

West Hollywood is soaking up the sun in the last weeks of what is technically summer. With autumn on the horizon, fashion trends of summer are shifting into the fads of fall.

Just in time, several Melrose Avenue boutiques are selling transitional items. From oversized jackets at Creatures of Comfort to colored denim at Fred Segal, Patch hit up local boutiques to find out what's hot for next season.

Fred Segal's shelves are brimming with colored denim, which is big right now for summer and likely will remain so through fall; scarves that are light, but could also be bundled; and jewelry by designer Lulu Frost, who incorporates vintage items into her pieces.

Creatures of Comfort, a few storefronts down, has a lot of designer duds seen on many a starlet. Oversized jackets in tribal prints and neon from some lesser known, burgeoning designers—Isabel Murant and Rachel Comey—are must-buys.

“Right now, we are seeing a lot of Navajo inspired stuff," said sales associate Adona Ohanesian at Madison, another popular boutique on Melrose. "And I wouldn’t say grunge, but the denim we are getting in lately is not your classic denim. It's more washed and treated. It feels like a waxy material. Because they are lighter washes they are transitional right now."

Madison is selling a great mix of timeless, trendy and high fashion goods, with items from designers such as Parker, Mason, House of Harlow and CC Skye.

"We have a lot of cut-out tops and a lot of slits," Ohanesian noted. Her picks: Mason dresses, A.L.C '60s sweaters, which are cropped and finely knitted, and Infinity scarves.

“I think accessorizing is one of the most important things, because that separates you from anyone else. Everyone can walk in and buy the same shirt, but it's how you make it your own that sets you apart," she added.

Ohanesian's tips for fall fashion: Stock up on accessories and layer jewelry. “Mix it up. Keep it different. Different metals," she said. "I think people are scared to mix metals, but it's actually really cute.”
