Yard Sales Bring Out Bargain Hunters and Neighbors

The second annual city-wide yard sale, named the "WehoGrnWknd" (West Hollywood Green Weekend), lets people get rid of unneeded items as well as visit with their neighbors.

It was time to reuse, recycle and renew in West Hollywood this weekend.

The sunny skies and warm temperatures made it ideal weather for the . Several dozen homeowners across West Hollywood ransacked their homes and closets to participate in the two-day yard sales as part of the “WehoGrnWknd” (West Hollywood Green Weekend).

The city also hosted an electronic waste disposal and document shredding center on Saturday in the parking lot of City Hall. People drove in and out of the lot to drop off recyclables like old computers, laptops, TVs and cardboard boxes as well as plenty of documents for shredding.

Aside from the weekend being a time to purge unwanted items from homes, it also served as an opportunity for neighbors to come together and for some to visit a yard sale for the first time.

“I don’t go to a lot of yard sales,” said Rebecca Kessel who has been a West Hollywood resident for six years. “I love it. It’s nice. I love just meeting people and seeing what they’ve got.”

Kessel spent part of Sunday afternoon shopping for shoes at a yard sale in her neighborhood on North Vista Street. Julia Goldberg was selling a pair of Franco Sarto shoes for five dollars. Goldberg said the yard sale was beneficial to all involved.

“Yesterday was awesome,” Goldberg said. “It’s a chance to really purge and to really have fun.”

Bargain hunters all over the area were in full force to take advantage of the low prices.

Down the street at 7404 Fountain Ave., Natasha Fontaine was also happy to purge some of her belongings.

“We’re trying to let go emotionally of our things,” Fontaine said. “I like garage sales. I like having them. It gives me a chance to refresh my life.”

Fontaine said the West Hollywood city-wide event is also coming in handy since she plans to relocate to Barcelona soon. She, Andy Anderson and Ryan Taylor all joined forces to sell their goods. It was important to them to sell items that were still in good shape and not simply old items that no one would want, Anderson said.

“Everybody likes a bargain, and some people can’t afford nice stuff,” Anderson said. “Natasha said if I haven’t worn the clothes in five months, someone else should have them.”

In addition to selling shoes, clothes and other household items, all of the sellers said electronics were popular, and some buyers were also interested in gold and silver jewelry although not all of the sellers had the latter among their wares.

Taylor said she felt gratified to join in the cause especially when helping a few buyers, including a woman from Guatemala who was simply grateful to be able to purchase a pair of 20-dollar Nikes to send to her family in Guatemala.

“It’s kind of a blessing,” Taylor said. “It’s nice to give back to the most sincere people.”
