City officials and same-sex marriage supporters celebrate the federal court judge's ruling.

Same-sex marriage supporters gathered at West Hollywood Park on Wednesday to celebrate U.S. District Court Judge Vaughn Walker's ruling on Proposition 8.

In the 136-page ruling, Walker deemed the measure unconstitutional and wrote, "Proposition 8 fails to advance any rational basis in singling out gay men and lesbians for denial of a marriage license."

Supporters held signs and flags and were greeted by West Hollywood City Council members, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and members of the Equal Rights Foundation.

"I am grateful that Judge Walker was able to look past the political controversy and make a legally sound ruling," said West Hollywood Mayor John Heilman. "So many people have worked extremely hard for the recognition of LGBT rights, and I am overjoyed that we have achieved this milestone for marriage equality."
