rights in Iran will be the topic of discussion at an upcoming speaker series
sponsored by the City of West Hollywood.
The event, "Human Rights in Post-Election Iran," will feature guest
speakers, including Faraz Sanei, a researcher for the Middle East and North
Africa Division of Human Rights Watch and Homa Sarshar, who is a journalist,
author and lecturer.
Jamal Abdi, Policy Director for the National Iranian American Council and
Iranian activist and businessman Ali Shakeri are also among those scheduled to
West Hollywood City Councilman John Heilman, who is helping organize the event and will serve as moderator, said he thought it would be a good time to focus on the subject given the current climate in the Middle East.
"I thought with the recent changes in the Middle
East and, in particular, with the election in Iran where there are lots
of human rights issues, that it would be a good time to think about what
is going on there and is there any hope for advancement in human
rights with the election," Heilman said.
The upcoming event is part of an ongoing series on the subject of human rights. Heilman said focusing on Iran holds a special significance for those who live in West Hollywood.
"I think sometimes people forget that we have a
significant number of Iranian Americans who live in West Hollywood and
on our borders," Heilman said.
While the panel is free it does require that people reserve a spot in advance.
The event will take place at 7 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 23, at the West Hollywood Library located at 625 North San Vicente Blvd. It is being co-sponsored by the National Iranian American Council and Human Rights Watch.
