Construction on the Sunset La Cienega Project Will Soon Begin

Demolition for the new buildings is scheduled to begin next Monday.

Demolition is scheduled to begin next week to make way for two, new developments, known as the Sunset La Cienega Project, that will be built near the intersection of Sunset and La Cienega Boulevards.

The developments will be located at 8490 Sunset Blvd. and 8500 Sunset Blvd.

The project at 8490 Sunset Blvd. will be a 235,000-square-foot structure, consisting of two, ten-story towers, that will house a hotel, a restaurant and some shops.

The building at 8500 Sunset Blvd. will consist of two towers housing apartments with restaurants and retail stores located on the ground level, according to Francisco Contreras, West Hollywood's project planner.

There will also be public plazas at both sites that will be open to the community, Contreras said.

While no lanes on Sunset Boulevard are scheduled to close, there will be some sidewalk closures during the construction process.

The project has been decades in the making, according to city officials, who say they are proud to see it finally coming to fruition.

"We're excited to see the project finally move forward," Contreras said. "I think it will bring much-needed energy to that intersection. It's one of the gateways to the Sunset Strip."

Demolition is scheduled to begin on Monday, Aug. 12.

The Skidmore Owings & Merrill Architectural Firm is designing the hotel buildings. That firm, along with Lorcan O’Herlihy Architects Construction, will also work on the residential buildings.

Construction will take about two years, according to Contreras.
