The openly gay director of Pink Flamingos and Hairspray will receive the Outfest Achievement Award at the LGBT film festival's opening ceremonies held on July 12.
Filmmaker John Waters will receive this year’s Achievement Award during opening ceremonies at Outfest. The annual LGBT film festival which runs July 12-22 will honor the openly gay director of such films as Pink Flamingos, Hairspray and Serial Mom with the its highest honor for his body of work that has made a significant contribution to LGBT film and media. Outfest, celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, will also honor the late AIDS activist and Celluloid Closet author Vito Russo by screening a new documentary about his life. Jessica Abrams is riding high these days. Her play The Laughing Cow opened two weeks ago at the Meta Theater on Melrose. It’s already won a Pick of the Week from LA Weekly. And now there’s talk of moving it to a larger venue once it completes its run. Loosely based on her experiences while working as an assistant at Disney, The Laughing Cow follows various characters in the workplace as circumstances bring each of them to a bit of enlightenment. Rich cultural and ethnic flavor of city's Russian community will be celebrated May 18-20 in Plummer Park with 11th annual Russian Style Festival.

Gardenia Restaurant will host country singer/songwriters for an special "in-the-round" performance.
West Hollywood goes a little bit country on Wednesday as three Nashville songwriters take the stage for an unusual show. Singer/songwriters Jane Bach, Sandra Piller and Karen Hart will bring their country tunes to the Gardenia Restaurant and Lounge at 7066 Santa Monica Blvd. Showtime is at 9 pm. The show is unusual in that all three of the writers will take the stage at the same time to perform “in the round,” a format where the first songwriter will perform one or two songs, then the next will perform a few songs, etc., until it comes back to the first performer for another round. The future of luxury interior design will be the topic of a panel discussion held May 3 at the Pacific Design Center. Architecture author Michael Webb will moderate the discussion, “Luxury by Land and by Sea,” that will focus on interior design trends for upscale hotels and resorts as well as super yachts. More than two dozen artists display works at the 91-year-old roadhouse as part of the ongoing Pacific Standard Time exhibit.
The City of West Hollywood’s PST…It All Started Here brought legendary artist Ed Kienholz “back” to one of his old hangouts, Barney's Beanery, in a unique bartering event earlier this week. In a tribute to Kienholz’s original Barter Show, held 43 years ago, a group of contemporary artists created 21 works displayed for barter on the walls of the 91-year-old venerable roadhouse, which was a popular gathering spot with artists in the 60s. The 1969 Barter took place originally at the Eugenia Butler Gallery on La Cienega Boulevard. Then, accepted bartering items at the unique art auction included the trading of two horses for a watercolor.
