Sunday's Scoop: Bikers, Block Party and Russian Style

The Russian Style Festival winds down with a day of entertainment and family activities in Plummer Park while the Hudson Block Party returns and a bike race zooms through town.

Greetings and welcome to City Scoop. Today is Sunday, May 20, the 141st day of 2012. Here’s what’s going on in West Hollywood today.

Russian Style

The city’s Russian Advisory Board is sponsoring the in The weekend-long event wraps up with a day-long celebration that includes entertainment, music, food and family activities, starting at 11 a.m. The Royal Basketball School will play a game of basketball and compete in a shooting contest. The celebration concludes with a gala concert beginning at 5 p.m. Admission is free.

The Amgen Tour de California bicycle race will zoom through West Hollywood for about 10 minutes at approximately 10:10 a.m. The final leg of the 750-mile race, which started a week ago in Santa Rosa, will kick off from Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills and then pass through Weho en route to LA Live downtown. There will be rolling street closures along Santa Monica Boulevard, Doheny Drive and Sunset Boulevard as the bikers peddle toward the finish line.

If last year’s Hudson Block Party was any indication, this year’s incarnation will tongues wagging for weeks afterwards. Over a dozen bands, including White Rabbits, LP and Haim are scheduled to perform while local merchants and community organizations will have booths. The block party runs 11 a.m.-11 p.m. in front of the and the adjacent Bank of America parking lot on the northeast corner of Crescent Heights and Santa Monica Boulevard. Admission is $10 prior to 2 p.m.; $15 after 2 p.m. Proceeds will benefit the .

Bands Playing in Town

  • Kill the Academy and Dead End Amelia with Absence of a Hero, Them Devils, Red Light Sky and Vas Defrans at the Troubadour. Doors open at 6 p.m.
  • Bitch with Heavyness, Devils Beatdown and Addictive Suicide at Whiskey a Go Go. Show start at 7 p.m.
  • Rachel Sierra with Ultra Love, Lumaria and Eric Schackne at the Viper Room. Doors open at 7:30 p.m.
