Plummer Park Denied Renovation Funds

The city will appeal the state's decision to deny Plummer Park redevelopment funds that would have been used to renovate the historic park.

The State of California has recently denied the City of West Hollywood the option of using redevelopment money for a planned $41 million renovation at historic Plummer Park.

The city was alerted on Oct. 15 that they would be unable to allocate redevelopment funds to the park project, and city officials said Thursday that they plan to appeal the state's decision at a Thursday meeting with the state Department of Finance.

At Thursday's meeting, the City of West Hollywood will have the opportunity to present new information and dispute the decision, and the state will make its final call after the meeting.

The city will argue that bonds have already been issued to help finance the $41 million renovation.

In its original plans, the city planned to use $14 million in redevelopment money for the project, to go along with $27 million in bond money, and the city took out a $30 million bond for the project in March of 2011.

However, in June of 2011, cities were required to do away with redevelopment agencies, relinquishing all funds to the state to help solve the budget crisis. At that point, the renovations to Plummer Park began to hang in the balance.

The final decision on whether the project can move forward will come after Thursday's meeting, which will be held at 9 a.m.
