Outfest Saturday: Movies, Panel Discussion and Gong Show

Fifteen programs are scheduled today at the annual LGBT film festival including Olympia Dukakis as part of a lesbian couple ("Cloudburst"), a panel discussion about movie financing and the always hilarious Home Video Gong Show contest.

Fifteen programs are on tap for Outfest’s tenth and penultimate day. The annual gay and lesbian film festival is keeping movie-lovers busy catching up with the latest offerings of documentaries, drama, comedies and shorts.

Today’s programs are being held at three different venues:

  • Directors Guild of America (DGA) theatre (7920 Sunset Blvd. at Fairfax Avenue)
  • John Anson Ford Amphitheatre (2580 Cahuenga Blvd.)
  • REDCAT (Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theatre) at the Disney Concert Hall (631 W. 2nd Street) in downtown Los Angeles.

Same day tickets can be purchased at the venue box office one hour prior to screening time. Advance tickets for screenings happening later in the festival can be purchased in the DGA lobby.

A complete directory of the films offered is available on the Outfest website, but below is a quick rundown of some of the best playing today:

Any Day Now – period drama about a gay couple fighting bureaucracy and homophobia to become adoptive parents to an abandoned boy in 1970s LA (11:30 a.m., DGA 1).

White Frog – drama about an Asian family who discover their son was gay after his untimely death, starring B.D. Wong, Joan Chen and Harry Shum, Jr. (2 p.m., DGA 1).

My Brother the Devil – drama about a British Arab gay teen who desperately tries to be tough like his older brother, a gang leader (4:30 p.m., DGA 1).

Where’s the Money? – panel discussion featuring Outfest alumni directors and producers talking about how to find money to finance independent films (4:30 p.m., DGA 2).

Walk Away Renee – documentary about director Jonathan Caouette (Tarnation) who takes a road trip with his mentally unstable mother (5 p.m., REDCAT).

Cloudburst – comedy about a 70-something lesbian couple on a road trip through Canada, starring Olympia Dukakis and Brenda Fricker. (8:30 p.m., Ford Amphitheatre).

Famous Joe Project – comedy about a newly out gay man who does video posts about all aspects of his life including the strange world of sugar daddies and porn stars he stumbles upon. (9:45 p.m., DGA 1).

14th Annual Home Video Gong Show – a celebrity panel passes judgment on home videos submitted by the audience (9:45 p.m., REDCAT).
