Monday's Scoop: Kissing Flashmob, General Plan and 'It Gets Better'

Mark your calendars for Nov. 7 as gay and lesbian couples smooch in front of the Pope.

General Plan: It could turn out to be a long night at the City Council meeting tonight as it prepares to take public comments on the General Plan draft. Monday night will be the second adoption hearing for the General Plan. The council will also review the Planning Commission's recommendations. The meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. at West Hollywood Park.

Pucker Up: There's a group on Facebook called Queer Kissing Flashmob that's planning to hold a massive event of gay and lesbian couples kissing in front of the Pope when he arrives at Cathedral Square in Barcelona, Spain, on Nov. 7 . Read all about it here

"It Gets Better" at The Abbey: In the wake of recent teen suicides, The Abbey will be transforming its restaurant and bar into a studio for the "It Gets Better" project. Community members will be able to contribute videos to Dan Savage's It Gets Better Project on YouTube, a campaign that helps support LGBT youth who may be struggling with personal issues or bullying. The studio sessions will be Monday-Wednesday from 4-9 p.m. Click here for more information.

Action Alert from AIDS Project LA: The organization AIDS Project LA says that funding for its Necessities of Life Program food pantry is at risk. The group is asking its supporters to contact their senators and representatives to educate them on the importance of the Emergency Food and Shelter Program. AIDS Project says cuts to this program will affect the community it serves and the resources it has available. An e-mail or a phone call is all that is necessary. Click here for more information.

Lead Poison Prevention Week: Did you know the main cause of lead poisoning for children in Los Angeles County is exposure to peeling lead-based paint? It's commonly found in homes, apartments and buildings built before 1978. National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week is all this week and the Department of Health has free materials in many languages, as well as answers to questions on lead poisoning prevention. You can call 800-LA-4-LEAD or search here for more information.
