Bodhi Tree Closing Dec. 31; Owners Remain Hopeful About Selling Business
The internationally known New Age bookstore on Melrose Avenue will close at the end of the year, unless a possible sale comes through at the last minute.
Christmas shoppers looking for bargains may want to stop by Bodhi Tree Bookstore this month. The 41-year-old spiritual, metaphysical shop at 8585 Melrose Ave. will close permanently Dec. 31, and everything in the store is on sale.
Two years ago, owners Phil Thompson and Stan Madson announced they were going out of business unless someone purchased the business. Both in their 70s, Thompson and Madson were ready to retire, but they wanted to keep the business alive, so they offered it for sale.
For 18 months, there were no takers, but late in the summer, Bodhi Tree announced on its website that a purchaser had come through. Unfortunately, that deal fell apart in October, according to office manager Neisha. Now they are talking to other potential buyers.
“More than one person was looking to buy,” Neisha told Weho Patch. “These were people who were interested before, but we had already made a commitment to the two ladies. They were already in the queue, so once the two ladies backed out, we started talking to them. They’ve already been vetted, so we know they’re serious.”
The negotiations for the store are ongoing and an announcement could come any day.
“Things seem to change every day,” Neisha said. “It’s gotten to the point, we just laugh at the ups and downs, but we’re keeping good thoughts and are hopeful the sale will go through.”
If the sale does happen, the new owners will have to find a new location for the business. Thompson and Madson have sold the property to a buyer who owns several other properties along Melrose.
But in the meantime, Bodhi Tree has put everything on sale. After the doors close on Dec. 31, they will spend the next several weeks dismantling the store and selling off fixtures. They have to vacate the premises by Jan. 31, Neisha said.
Valuable website
If someone does buy the business, that buyer may opt to run it just as an online bookstore. Bodhi Tree has a well-maintained computer system and a large database of customers. Plus, there is the Bodhi Tree name, which is known worldwide. “That’s very valuable,” said Neisha.
Bodhi Tree employs about 24 people, down from a peak of about 100 in the late 80s. All of those employees will be looking for work come the new year unless a new buyer is found.
Bodhi Tree opened on July 10, 1970, with an initial inventory of 2,000 books. At the time, books on Eastern philosophy, transcendental meditation and non-Christian religions were difficult to find as mainstream bookstores did not carry them.
Once Bodhi Tree proved there was a market for the books, publishers started producing more titles and mainstream bookstores created sections for New Age/metaphysical books.
Larger bookstores and online retailers like Amazon were able to offer deeper discounts, which hurt business. But Thompson told Patch in an interview in February that what hurt the business most was the parking problems created after the city introduced permit parking in the surrounding neighborhoods.
Beyond a bookstore, Bodhi Tree served as a gathering place for like-minded people. The adjacent Meeting Center building, which Thompson and Madson purchased in the late 70s, hosted many lectures, workshops and meetings on a variety of topics.

That's a shame. I REALLY enjoy this book store. All the good places close in WH and crummy awful places open up replacing them. WH just isn't the same anymore. To many breeders and single women moved here. I prefer the gay area to be for gay people ONLY.

I feel so sad for you Paul. Can you define which areas are gay and which aren't because I may have to consider moving. I can sympathize with you - all those breeders (ugh) and worse, single women (vagina alert) must have burst your balloon but good. And if I am correct some of the Gay have even caught the breeder bug and want to get married (ick) and have families (yuck). And those single women - can you believe some of them are (ugh) lesbians and have lesbian friends who are also lesbians and some get pregnant - so you can't even tell if a single pregnant woman is a breeder or a gay. What to do? I am desolate at your very tragic state.

Paul - so you know - places where only one "kind" of people live is often referred to as a "ghetto". It was first used in Venice, Italy to describe the place where Italian Jews of that city were locked in every night and let out every morning. Similar ghettos existed in cities worldwide. You can look this up. Most ghetto dwellers knew they were being kept prisoners for some imagined reason - such as religion, color, ethnicity or or other differences. What you are suggesting for the LGBT community is a ghetto. I live in an area of WeHo with Gay people on both sides, above me, next door and across the street. Whose ghetto is whose? Some predate me and some are new. No one is locked in at night. You have said I was rude - suggesting any city have a ghetto is shameful. I am of the opinion if you do find one you will be its only resident.

West Hollywood is a great city which embraces a wonderful blend of of orientations. The Bodhi tree is my all-time favorite bookstore bar none. In my 35 years of patronage, they have provided a warm, welcoming and cozy environment. They have provided, for me, 100's of life-transforming editions and the opportunity to select beautiful/unique gifts for others as well. I will miss The Bodhi Tree as I would miss a beloved family member and you shall remain ever in my heart. God Bless!

Perhaps donate any unsold books to the new, W. Hollywood Library. And to the person living in some kind of 'gay bubble', if it wasn't for the 'breeders' you wouldn't even be alive. Weho is evolving to include a balance of all types of people. I'm gay, and I like the changes in regards to its diversity.

We should forgive Paul and pray he broadens his view of humanity and of the WeHo community. In the very essence of our being, we are all one.

Forgiveness is not a requirement of my faith. It is always sad though to see a member of a scorned and abused community be so bitter and bigoted. He must be so angry and unyielding to speak such ugly and prejudiced words

Yes, I agree Chloe. It is sad. Especially when there are people like myself, for instance, who have gay and lesbian siblings and relatives, love them exactly for who they are and support them in every way.

I do not think Paul likes women very much. Maybe he got screwed over really bad by some. I have not seen any breeders around here. They cannot afford the rent.

Tracey - you are really right. When one has a baby there is a chance that it will be a boy or girl, straight or gay or even transgender (or bi). If you are not prepared to love your baby/child no matter who it is - hair color, eye color, gender and orientation then you need to reconsider having children. We are who we are and loving is not something we should be able to take or leave. And for Wendy - my own building is full of breeders and gay men and they are all excellent folks. My neighbors on each side are both and I see strollers and kids and men only parents and women only parents and mixed parents - in my opinion how it should be . Sorry Paul. In this case - it's your problem - the rest of us seem quite content.

What in the hell is a breeder? I thought that was a wefare queen who has a lot of kids so she can draw a lot of benefits. A woman that has 7 kids from 7 different Fathers so to speak.

Funny how all the people who disagree with my opinions as truthful as they are happen to be female. Gay men who are my age and who remember how WH was before the breeders decided to move into town and settle down. When that happen over time things were never the same. Agree or disagree it is a truth account.

Paul I recall when West Hollywood was a Jewish neighborhood 45 years ago. In the early 70s Gay men started to move in . It's not like Gay Men had a lifetime title to the ownership of WeHo. What is a breeder anyway? I thought you were talking about welfare women but is a breeder any straight person in Gay slang?
Is your complaint that straight people are moving into West Hollywood and it should be officially reserved as boys town only? What is your complaint about straight people anyway? Did they drag down the quality of life?

Paul you come across as a bigot. If you don't want people to call you a "fag" or a "fruit" or "queen", then don't refer to straight humans as "breeders". You have breeder equipment and don't use it for breeding. Not all straight people engage is sexual activity to procreate. You are a misogynistic man and this lumps you in with breeders and gay alike. It's a guy thing. Get real.

The term breeder was designed for straight people who decide to settle down in a gay affluent area. Yes, they have dragged down the quality of life gay men like myself experience and enjoyed so much during the 80's & 90's. Picture fire island but not quite that extreme. Today West Hollywood which was once referred to as the creative city, now resembles the valley. Sadly, our beloved gay brothers & sisters were hit hard during the AIDS epidemic. That's when the breeders came to town and decided it was a great place to raise there children because the gays made it so beautiful, safe....... I love children and there have always been kids here just not as many as there are now. Today West Hollywood seems more like Sherman Oaks.

Your Wrong Paul, West Hollywood was a vibrant place before the Gays ever came along in the early 70s. The sunset strip was a happening place for 40 years before the gay movement. Here is a case of the last people to arrive claiming they always ran the place. You got your history all screwed up. Straight people did not replace those hit by aids.

Paul - embrace change and progress. Straight people in WeHo adore the Gay; we have no problem. If we don't - you shouldn't. AIDS changed a lot of things but we have hope and research and be glad so many of your hated breeders support gay causes with ease and hope. We are not the enemy. If we didn't like the Gay we WOULD be in Sherman Oaks - those are the ones I can't stand.

I am certainly not a historian when it comes to the evolution of the gay movement to West Hollywood. I do remember the gay pride parade was first held on Hollywood Blvd and the police where beating gay people like Rodney King. The gay movement REALLY began in a gay bar in New York. The drag queens grew tired of the gay bars, which where illegal back then, being raided regularly by police. One night they stood up in what was a monumental stand causing a riot thus the beginning of gay rights. West Hollywood became a place gay people settled down in and lived openly. San Francisco had the Castro district which today has also been invaded by breeders. The gay movement was on a huge wave when AIDS changed everything and continues to do so. Beautiful, young, talented people gone. One can ONLY wonder had AIDS never happened or if it was more controllable with modern medicine like today if our people would be fighting the good fight, alive living in West Hollywood. What if?

PS - Not that the victims of AIDS did not fight for there lives against this horrible disease but early on and for what seemed forever, so little was known in regards to treating this bizarre new epidemic which was originally called gay cancer. People got sick and were dead shortly after.

Paul - for an avowed gay you are sadly bereft of your own history. The fight back started with Stonewall. And before that with Harry Hay (a friend deceased sadly) of the Mattachine Society who was joined by many young gay men who met in secret to relax and be themselves - Will Geer was a member. The women created a group called the Daughters of Bilitis for the same purpose and the sh*t hit the fan at Stonewall. Just as you are gay - I am straight - but unlike you I have always - from my teens - supported equal rights and this always included gay people. I suspect I am older than you are and have seen some ugly bigotry. You need to grow - since you are healthy enough to do so. I was part of MECLA, Elizabeth's courageous crusade and knew some of the very first docs who tried to understand "gay cancer". I have lost precious friends from it and when I see those who are thriving and surviving my heart swells with hope and joy. You are a bitter Gay man and not one of the minority sadly. I lived in WeHo in the 70's and it was a great city. Like all children - it started to grow up - something you might consider doing - instead of calling names.

No sh_t Chloe. Stonewall was in NYC. It might be still be? Sheldon (Shelly) Anderson was a community activist here in West Holly wood and he owned many apartment buildings and he founded the first gay bank, Bank of LA as well as a legendary bathhouse on 3rd street, the 8709. Once AIDS starting killing people pressure to close the bathhouse grew. It finally closed in 1985. Sadly, Sheldon passed away in 1987. I know the history by living through it.

Sheldon Andelson created MECLA at the start of the Gay Men's Aids Crisis (poorly named) with my friend Dr. Michael Roth and many others. Michael was Elizabeth's doctor and was responsible - with the sadness of Rock Hudson's decline as well, of making her aware that we were in an epidemic that was not gay but pandemic. I too know the history by being here when it happened and weeping copiously when people Ioved died. Here is the bottom line - you loathe breeders. I do not have this problem with any humans that live in my midst. Find a mate who has the same affliction; move to a solitary existence and let's cut out all this crap. I am not moving and not breeding. I am not denigrating, hating or blaming any group. Viruses don't care; pray we will end AIDS quickly. I hope you don't have it. And if you do, I hope you are doing well with medication. I have the gay in my own family and I love them and always have. I suspect my own father was gay and that was a shame - because we could have had even more fun together as I grew up had I known. He certainly was a metrosexual and a brilliant man. We always called the Bank of LA the Bank of Sheldon Andelson. Paul- I would like to end this now. We are going nowehere with it and despite your misogynistic mindset - you are someone's son and were loved - I hope by the breeders who had you. May I wish you a happy holiday and ask that we stop - now. I am not the enemy but this has run its course Shalom

I never said I hate anyone. I just prefer West Hollywood with my friends alive in well living here and enjoying life. If is definitely not the same but neither am I. I'm a lot older and naturally I see things differently at this perspective a pose to a young gay man coming up today who has no idea what it was like in the good ole days.

While we're professing tolerance lets take a moment and reconsider the Sherman Oaks bashing. They're people just like us. Gay and straight. Honest.
And farewell Bodhi Tree. A one-of-a-kind place.
